Fleur flower pattern
I recently wore my Caitlin cami with a jacket over the top and was looking for something pretty to wear on my lapel. I wanted it to match back to the colour of my cami, and thought that a fabric flower would be the perfect girly touch I was looking for. So, of course, I set about to make one, and I thought you might like to make one too.
The Fleur fabric flower comes in 3 sizes – small, medium or large. If you like wearing flowers in your hair, try the small size with a hair clip attached. The medium size is a perfect understated lapel brooch or a cute wrist corsage. The large size is my favourite for a statement piece, it makes a beautiful brooch or a wrist corsage that says wow! It uses an extra layer of tulle or organza to give it extra volume.
The photo below is my wedding dress. My daughter agreed to try it on and model the Fleur flower I made from some left over fabric. This is the large size flower, the fabric is a really beautiful light blue silk, and I teamed it with some soft white tulle. I wish I had one to wear when I got married 18 years ago!
I’ll also be making a Fleur wrist corsage for my daughter’s formal this year. It adds a special touch, and I love the idea that the corsage will last forever and won’t wither and die like a real flower.
The Fleur can be made out of any lightweight soft material. I recommend using lightweight silks or satins, lightweight cottons, georgette, all over lace or scallop galloon lace. You’ll also need some matching felt for the base.
The Fleur is an easy and quick make. Each flower took me under an hour from start to finish including cutting out. The cutting out will probably take the most time. I’ve used an overlocker / serger to neaten the lower edge of the row of petals, and a machine to do a gather stitch, but the flowers could easily be made without any machines.
